Violet Trees was written for a concert co-organised by Lianhe Zaobao: 当诗遇见歌 | RHAPSODY IN VERSE as part of the 2018 Singapore Writers Festival. It was premiered by Schola Cantorum (Albert Tay, conductor. Ming Wei Neo, pianist) at Victoria Theatre on Saturday 11 November 2018.

The text depicts a picturesque scene of the poet's serendipitous encounter with a tree filled with violet flowers at midday. The poet Tong Nuan (佟暖) recalled that it was probably the Trumpet Tree (喇叭紫薇), also known as Tebebuia Rosea. The poem was written in 2003 during the SARS outbreak, in memory of his mother.
