Breakfast Across The Causeway
(2025)

Text by Niu You Xiao Sheng
Instrumentation:
SATB (with divisi)
Duration: ca. 8'
Breakfast Across The Causeway is a choral work commissioned by Ren Sing Choir (任 Sing 合唱團) for their "A.K.A. A Music Story" (阿卡音乐小说) concert based on the poem of the same title by Niu You Xiao Sheng (牛油小生), and artwork by Chong Jiin Song. The two-movement work premiered under conductor Chia Wee Kiat at Permaisuri Zarith Sofiah Opera House on 12th July 2025, Saturday 7:30pm.
I. you tiao cheung fun
The poetic analogies of food become entwined with feelings and daily life. Further wordplay in the musical setting attempts to capture the eclectic nature of the original text. The varying tempi is a playful take on the traffic jam sometimes experienced travelling up the causeway. This movement is an homage to the late Mr Leong Yoon Pin, the doyen of Singaporean composers. In particular, the food names in Cantonese reference one of his classic choral
works in Nanyang style - "Street Calls" (街頭巷尾) written in 1997.
II. kaya butter toast (下篇: 加椰牛油) 3'
A series of seemingly unrelated thoughts appear, but eventually settles for a grounded attitude toward life. The second movement maintains a regular lilt and a light-hearted mood throughout. A return-trip of sorts.

Breakfast across the Causeway

The Causeway
is surprisingly short.
A cheongfun-length
slice of history.
No need to hunt for the char siew within.
After all, its traditional sweet sauce ends up currying for flavour.
Lately on coffee mornings,
patriotism is less sweet.
American breakfasts are greasy and old-fashioned, so someone suggested
salad as a healthier choice,
dressed with the meditation:
"My body is not mine,
not even my mind".
Except my stomach is
a big belly of begrudging bitterness printed on two A4 pages,
where decisions on a menu are way more agonizing than voting.
But diners never abstain from ordering.
Whether hungry, or hangry,
there are always a couple of recommendations;
including the frustrated
expression of a careless deliveryman at the door.
Memories of ah ma's flavours have faded away.
These days, even kaya betrays butter.
I have made my choice:
No need to satiate the tastebuds,
it is enough to simply be.
